Fans of the Wonder Woman franchise can rejoice as director Patty Jenkins confirmed a third film is in the works, nearly a year after the ‘threequel’ was first announced.

During an appearance at the virtual DC FanDome event on Saturday, while chatting with OG Wonder Woman Lynda Carter about the superhero’s legacy and their hopes for the character in the future, the ladies spilled the news.

‘We’re super excited about Wonder Woman 3,’ Jenkins said in excerpt while Lynda gushed ‘it’s coming!’

Wonder Woman 3: ‘We’re super excited about Wonder Woman 3,’ Patty Jenkins said in excerpt while Lynda Carter gushed ‘it’s coming!’ as they confirmed the third film during the virtual DC FanDome event on Saturday

Carter seemed to be a bit loose lipped as she coyly said to Jenkins: ‘In Wonder Woman 3…which I can’t wait to hear you come out with,’ prompting Patty to flash a smile and interject: ‘You can’t wait to hear me not talk about.’

‘Oh but it’s coming. Wonder Woman 3 is coming,’ to which Jenkins teased ‘sure is.’

Taking the floor Patty said: ‘We’re super excited about Wonder Woman 3. Gal (Gadot), who is so bummed about not being here, who’s the busiest person in the world, with now three little kids and shooting.

‘..But we are all three very excited about some things coming up with Wonder Woman 3.’

The first Wonder Woman film was released in 2017 and the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 had a joint theatrical and streaming release on HBO Max last Christmas.

Original: The trilogy began with 2017’s Wonder Woman and between the first two films the franchise grossed $989M at the global box office

Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, 1984 experienced delays (like so many others). The initial release was set for June 2020, before it was delayed to August and then October, before Warner Bros. settled on a December 25 release.

Two days after the film was released (it grossed $46.5M domestically and $166.5M worldwide), it was announced that Warner Bros. had fast tracked development on a third movie.

Despite a number of theaters in major markets being closed at the time of its release, the film did $16.7M in domestic ticket sales – the best opening weekend numbers of any film amid Coronavirus at that time.

‘As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984 we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,’ Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich told Deadline.
