Conspiracy nuts have trolled grieving TV star Deborah Knight by claiming her mother-in-law’s tragic Covid death on Sunday night was a hoax.

Beloved grandmother Connie Dunbar, 88, died after contracting Covid from a nurse at Cavalry Haydon Retirement Community in Canberra.

Scots-born Ms Dunbar – who Ms Knight’s husband Lindsay’s mum – was double-vaccinated against the virus and died showing barely any symptoms, the star explained.

But after she went public with news of tragedy on her 2GB show on Monday, the family was targeted by Covid-deniers who claimed she was lying.

‘My husband has lost his dear Mum to Covid and some cruel heartless people are questioning if it’s a hoax or if she even had the virus as she was double vaccinated,’ tweeted Ms Knight on Monday evening.

‘Appalling.’

The backlash came after A Current Affair presenter Ms Knight – who is also a former Ten news presenter and Today host – broke the news of the family tragedy on air.

‘it is personal for me in the ACT today,’ she said.

‘My mother-in-law passed away overnight. Connie Dunbar was her name, a wonderful, wonderful woman.

‘Connie moved to Australia from Scotland as a young woman, and she raised her family here in Australia – her children Jenny and my husband Lindsay.

‘Connie was fully-vaccinated, but she couldn’t beat Covid. She passed away just after 11.30 last night.

Scots-born Ms Dunbar – mother of Ms Knight’s husband Lindsay – was double-vaccinated against and died showing barely any symptoms, said Ms Knight, pictured here with her husband and their three children

‘She didn’t have any real symptoms. She didn’t have a temperature. She didn’t have trouble breathing, but she just was asleep, the entire time.

‘She couldn’t wake up and couldn’t beat it, and she will be sadly, sadly missed.’

But Ms Knight had a strong message for any anti-vaxxers and Covid deniers listening.

‘Behind every single death, and behind every single number is a grieving family. Much loved people and their families miss them dearly,’ she said.

‘Covid is cruel. And for anyone doubting how cruel it is, or even questioning whether Covid is real, I can tell you, it is all too real.

‘If you’re still hedging on getting vaccinated, that very simple act, with plenty of vaccine options, plenty of availability, it can stop more families like mine from grieving and mourning the loss of a much loved family member, like Connie Dunbar.

‘So if not for yourself, do it for others.’

She added: ‘My thoughts today are very much with Connie and all of those many people who did love her, and the many lives she touched in her 88 years.’

Her tweet about the death sparked an outpouring of sympathy online, including condolences from fellow TV personalities.

‘That’s just awful, Deb. Some people… My condolences to Lindsay, and all of you,’ said ABC’s Breakfast News Host Michael Rowland.

Landline host Pip Courtney added: ‘Dear Deb, my thoughts go out to you and your husband. That your sadness could be so cruelly exacerbated is incomprehensible xxx’

The ACT recorded 28 new cases and three deaths on Monday but that did not include Ms Dunbar’s death, which was one of two to occur after the 8pm data cut off, so will be included in Tuesday’s figures.
